Historic Monkey Island Has Been Closed
The Washington Park Zoo Monkey Island is closed indefinitely due to deterioration of the exhibit. After 80 years of operation the exhibit is considered no longer safe to exhibit monkeys or to be serviced by zoo employees. Monkey Island will be closed until further notice and will eventually be restored after a major renovation takes place. The zoo has plans to design a new modern monkey island exhibit and will unveil those once they have been set.

Two New Bengal Tigers
In the fall of 2010, two new Bengal tigers: Zeus, who is a male White Tiger and Zena, who is an orange Bengal Tiger joined the zoo family. Zeus and Zena have gradually been introduced to the zoo's other White Tiger, Zusha and today all three are living happily together.

New Zoo Mascots
The Washington park zoo has a new zoo crew of fuzzy and friendly costume mascots including a lion, alligator, tortoise and tiger that will be used as educational and guest ambassadors for the zoo.
So if you always wanted to be the life of the party, volunteers are needed to wear our animal costumes at events and functions at the Zoo and out in the community. We also need cheerful and attentive escorts to speak for the animal characters, pass out zoo coupons, and answer basic questions about the Zoo.
The costumes are somewhat heavy and hot, and are best suited to people in good physical condition. Escorts should be comfortable in a crowd.

There is so Much to do at The Zoo
The zoo is still under going renovations so things are being added and improved daily. We would like to invite everyone to visit us and explore all that the zoo has to offer.
Australian Avian Adventure Exhibit Opens
The parakeets have landed at the Washington Park Zoo with the opening of the new Australian Avian Adventure exhibit.
This interactive exhibit allows visitors to get an up-close encounter with free flighted birds. Visitors have the opportunity to hand- feed the birds with specially made seed sticks, encouraging personal interaction.
Parakeets are found wild in Australia within large flocks numbering into the thousands.
